Violins have standard sizes for adults as and slightly smaller 7/8 size for women and teenagers. Full-size violins range from 13” to as much as 17” and up. Violins come in 9 primary sizes. Although the instruments may vary in their size, all versions of violins, are identical in pitch range and the ways they are produced and played.
The violins come in following sizes:
- Adult full “4/4” size at 23”-23.5” long and 14” wide, known as the standard size, as well as the “7/8” size at 22.5” long and 13.5” wide.
- Seven sizes are available for youth ages 3 to 12, where each size based on the arm length of the player. The arm size lengths are 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/10, 1/16, and 1/32. Violin bows also match the violins with various sizes. For children under 3, violins from cardboard are recommended. Violinists can try the fit to see what size is appropriate by comparing the instrument length to their arm length; the two lengths should be similar.
